Above-Fireplace TV Mounting: Complete Guide for Maryland Homes

Should You Mount Your TV Above the Fireplace? (Maryland Guide 2026)

It’s the most-asked question we get at ProTvMount MD: “Can I mount my TV above the fireplace?” The short answer: yes, but only if it’s done right. Heat damage, neck strain, and signal loss are real risks. Here’s how to do it safely.

    The Heat Damage Problem

Standard LED/OLED TVs are rated to operate up to 100°F (40°C). A wood-burning fireplace can push surface temperatures above the TV to 130-150°F. Even gas fireplaces routinely hit 110°F right above the mantel.

Heat damage symptoms: dead pixels, color shift, premature backlight failure, melted internal capacitors. Most TV warranties EXCLUDE damage from over-fireplace mounting.

4 Rules for Safe Above-Fireplace TV Installation

    1. Measure the Heat First

Run the fireplace for 30 minutes. Use an infrared thermometer to check the wall where the TV will mount. If it exceeds 95°F, you need a heat barrier or different location.

    2. Use a Mantel Shelf or Heat Deflector

A 6-inch mantel that extends beyond the fireplace opening redirects rising heat outward. Don’t have a mantel? We install copper or aluminum heat deflector plates.

    3. Tilt the TV Down 10-15 Degrees

Above eye level = neck strain. A tilting mount aimed at your seated position eliminates the “movie theater front row” effect. Required if center of TV is more than 6 inches above seated eye level.

    4. Hide All Cables In-Wall

Cables hanging down from a fireplace TV look terrible. We route HDMI, power, and ethernet through the wall and out below the mantel or to a side cabinet.

Best Mount Types for Fireplace Installations

    For above-fireplace, we recommend:

    • Tilting mount (most common): tilts down 10-15°, low profile
    • Full-motion articulating mount: extends out, tilts down, swivels for off-center viewing
    • Pull-down mount (premium): TV slides down in front of fireplace for ideal eye-level viewing, then retracts up

When NOT to Mount Above the Fireplace

    Don’t do it if:

    • The wall gets hotter than 110°F during use
    • The mantel is less than 4 inches deep
    • You watch TV for 4+ hours daily (neck strain over time)
    • You have an OLED TV (more heat-sensitive than LED)
