Mounting a TV on Brick or Concrete Walls: Complete 2026 Guide

How to Mount a TV on Brick or Concrete Walls (Maryland Guide 2026)

Brick and concrete walls are harder to mount on than drywall — but with the right tools and technique, they actually hold TVs MORE securely. Here’s everything you need to know about mounting a TV on brick or concrete in your Maryland home.

Brick vs. Concrete vs. Cinder Block: What’s the Difference?

    Solid Brick

Most older Maryland homes (Bethesda Federal-style, Baltimore rowhouses) have solid brick interior walls. Very strong, requires masonry anchors and a hammer drill.

    Brick Veneer

Common in newer construction. Brick is just facing — behind it is plywood and studs. Easier to mount if you can find studs through the brick.

Cinder Block / CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit)

Hollow blocks in basement or garage walls. Mid-difficulty — you need to hit the solid web, not the hollow cell.

    Poured Concrete

Found in modern basements and condos. Extremely strong but requires concrete-rated anchors and patience.

Tools You Need for Brick/Concrete Mounting

    • Hammer drill (NOT a regular drill — rotation only won’t work)
    • Masonry drill bits (carbide-tipped, sizes 1/4″ to 5/8″)
    • Concrete anchors: sleeve anchors, wedge anchors, or Tapcons
    • Hammer for setting sleeve anchors
    • Vacuum to clear dust from drilled holes
    • Level (4-foot is best)
    • Stud finder/multi-detector (for brick veneer)

    Step-by-Step: Mounting on Solid Brick

    1. Mark TV mount holes — Hold mount against wall, level, mark 4 hole positions with pencil
    2. Drill brick, NOT mortar joints — Mortar is weaker than brick. Drill into the solid face of the brick, NOT the gray lines between bricks
    3. Use proper drill bit — Match anchor diameter. Most TV mounts use 1/4″ or 5/16″ sleeve anchors
    4. Drill to anchor depth + 1/4″ — Anchors need extra space at bottom of hole
    5. Vacuum dust from holes — Critical for anchor grip. Use a shop vac, not compressed air (which pushes dust into the brick crack pattern)
    6. Insert sleeve anchors, tap flush — Use a hammer. Bolt threads should still be exposed
    7. Mount the wall plate — Tighten anchors with wrench. Don’t over-tighten or you’ll crack brick face
    8. Hang TV bracket — Verify level. Lock TV onto wall plate

Why DIY Brick Mounting Goes Wrong

The top 3 mistakes we see when called to fix DIY brick installations:

    • Drilled into mortar joints — Anchors pull out within months
    • Used drywall anchors — They expand into nothing inside brick
    • Hammer drill not used — Regular drill walks across brick surface, never bites in
